Lesson 2 — Compost: Turning Scraps Into Super Soil
Kids love this one. They launch their class compost experiment, build a mini thermal demo, learn what makes compost hot vs. cool, and start their class vermicompost bin with red wiggler worms. Students get to feed the worms, touch the bedding, and learn what food scraps worms actually want. They’ll explore the nitrogen vs. carbon balance using simple bucket-based ratios and start their first long-term investigation: “How does compost change over time?” This lesson empowers kids to see waste differently and feel the joy of creating something alive and useful.
